Ooops

This Thanksgiving, I'm thankful for... backups.

So, your intrepid webmaster was up late last night
getting things ready for his feast today, and doing
a bit of multitasking on the website. Seemed like a
good time to go ahead and decomission the old web
server too. So, copy over the last backups and personal
files - check. Open up the backups locally and make sure
it's all there - check. Alt-tab to the right terminal
and issue the command that deletes EVERYTHING -- oops.
Wrong terminal. A panicked Ctrl-C killed the delete
somewhere past the database and in the middle of the
website root folder. Oh, and well past the OS files
(Yes, linux really can erase itself completely -
witnessing that is an admin rite of passage evidently)

The rest is dull, but annoying. Didn't realize the DB
was gone at first. Tried to just reload the OS and swap
data over. Didn't realize the web files were partially
trashed until after the DB backup was uploaded. Tried
to half-arse the replacement to save time on uploads.
Found out the new OS installed was somehow hosed by
config files that evidently didn't survive the first
crash well. Slept off my frustration for a few hours.

Anyway, now I've given up on a quick fix. I also need
to focus on getting dinner ready. So, fresh OS install
- check. No old broken config files - check. Multihour
upload of full website backup - started.

Enjoy your turkey day folks, site should be up later.
At the very latest, tomorrow. And most of 11-25 is
unfortunately gone - database backup is from about
2AM EST 11-25

Update 1:23PM EST -- Turkey's in the oven (Phew! My first
time doing the Thanksgiving feast) and the upload is 44% complete.
Took 2hrs to get to this stage. Another 2hrs puts it too close
to dinner for me stop and sort things out, so no earlier than
9-10PM tonight.
